Cruising and Koalas On Magnetic Island!

Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island is a small island off the northeast coast of Australia. To get there, you have to take a ferry from the closest port, Townsville (no, not the city where the Powerpuff Girls live).

The actual ferry across the water to Magnetic Island is incredibly rough. People get seasick. The ferry staff explicitly tell you not to get up from your seat.

The ride, however, is well worth it, because Magnetic Island is sweet. It’s sunny on Magnetic Island 90% of the year. The roads are really bad, which means you have to drive these super cool tiny jeeps around the island to get anywhere. And last but not least, there are koala bears everywhere! If you want to see a wild koala while you’re on the east coast of Australia, this is probably the best place to do it.

Accommodation

The cabins you sleep in at Base are far enough away from the action that you can actually get some sleep.

Alex and I stayed at Base Magnetic Island. The beds are all in cabins and there’s a couple of large, shared washrooms, which sucks if you need to get up to go in the middle of the night. Base has a nice pool, good views, and the most happening bar on Magnetic Island. Everyone from all over the island comes to Base for a couple beers after supper and to participate in whatever that nights theme happens to be (ours were volleyball and trivia). The sleeping accommodations are far enough from the bar that you won’t be bothered. This makes Base a great place to stay no matter how you like to do your backpacking.

Exploring the Island

Magnetic Island might only be 52 square kilometers, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to get around. There’s a lot of great hiking to be done on Magnetic Island, but to get to most of it you need a good set of wheels. The bus will get you to the main hikes (like the one I took a bunch of photos of), but there’s enough off-roading that it’s worth renting a vehicle from one of the many local rental shops. They offer 4×4 jeeps like the one pictured above, and a tiny Barbie car that looks hilarious but can not handle the back roads at all.

I actually didn’t have the chance to drive around the island myself. Alex and I were going to rent a jeep, but she got sick. Instead I hitchhiked everywhere. Turns out British girls are pretty generous when it comes to giving a guy a ride.

Hiking

What’s a guy to do when he’s on an island in a foreign country and his travel buddy is sick in bed? Go hiking, of course!

Magnetic Island used to be a military outpost in World War II. There are still gun platforms and lookouts on the highest points of the island, so I figured I’d check them out. My efforts were rewarded with some great views.

Hit the ground running on the start of my hike up the mountain.

I just thought the lighting was nice here.

The old gun battery. Apparently the guns just disappeared one day shortly after the end of the war. None of the locals knew exactly when the disappeared. Spooky!

The path isn’t exactly clean-cut: most of it was blasted by dynamite and pick axes ASAP to let the Australian military move the guns up the mountain.

After hiking around the mountain for a bit, I was told I should do a hike from the nearby beach at Horseshoe Bay to another beach called Radical Bay. This turned out to be a bad idea in hindsight for a few reasons:

  • There are plenty of poisonous snakes on Magnetic Island.
  • This hiking path wasn’t easy and thus I didn’t see a single person for over 45 minutes.
  • I went alone and was low on water.

So yeah, not my brightest idea.

These flowers at the start of the hiking path trick you in to thinking it’ll be a pleasant experience.

The terrain is rocky and is a lot of uphill. Suddenly the fact that the island is always sunny doesn’t seem like a great thing.

And it just keeps going!

Finally we get to Radical Bay!

The beach is nicer here than most spots on the island, if I’m being honest.

That jeep in the distance belongs to some very nice British girls who would later save me the trouble of walking 10km back to the hostel.

On the way back to the hostel we stopped to visit the wallabies! They’re so small!

Bungalow Bay Animal Sanctuary

Just look at this beaut’.

Near Horseshoe Bay is another hostel called Bungalow Bay. And in Bungalow Bay is an animal sanctuary. The morning before Alex and I were supposed to leave Magnetic Island, we decided to stop by for a visit. When we got there, we were heartbroken to learn that because of a large, pre-arranged tour and a staffing shortage, the tour of the sanctuary was canceled at the time we wanted to go. We were told that it would be OK if we wanted to get a photo with the koala bears at the very end of the tour.

Taking what we could get, we attended and hoped for the best. What we got was better than any regular tour. The large group ahead of us was supposed to stay for an hour and a half, but had to leave after 45 minutes to keep their schedule. Alex and I were now the only two people in the sanctuary aside from the tour guide. Since he had 45 minutes to kill, he gave us our own private tour!

We couldn’t actually hold some of the birds ourselves because they were so young.

I proceeded to make friends with a tiny turtle.

This python was super friendly. She sort of just does her own thing. When Alex held her, she kept sticking her head up Alex’s shorts!

Alex was very excited by how blue the tongue was on the Blue-Tongued Lizard.

It’s a Wombat! I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anything quite like it, have you?

My pal from earlier. Unfortunately, he seemed to like Alex a whole lot more than he liked me.

Overall, I’d say Magnetic Island was a huge success. You don’t need to spend any more than two nights there, but I highly recommend you do. You won’t regret it.
