Let’s Go to the Beach! Yamba, Byron Bay, and Noosa

Alex and I had a busy week in Sydney. Our plan for Australia is to ride the Greyhound bus up the East Coast all the way to Cairns, and there’s no better way to experience the east coast than by spending your days at the beach! Our first stop: Yamba!

Yamba

Yamba is a small town of about 7000 people in the northeast part of New South Wales. It’s a small coastal fishing town, and a great place to learn to surf. During the two days that I spent in Yamba the winds were particularly high, so I didn’t have an opportunity to try surfing here. What I did have an opportunity to do was lounge on the beach after checking in to our hostel.

The main Yamba beach is the opposite of Bondi in Sydney. It’s quiet and great for relaxing.

The hostel we stayed at, Yamba YHA, has a great vibe. It seems like there’s always something to do in Yamba. The main floor of the hostel is home to one of the very few bars in Yamba, and they always had something fun going on in the evening. While we were there, they hosted a beerpong tournament. The theme was “Battle of the Nations”, everyone representing their home country. The only Canadian themed clothing I had with me was a pair of underwear, so it was a very interesting tournament.

Shane’s Tour

The best thing about Yamba is Shane’s Tour. Shane is one of the owners of the Yamba YHA hostel. There’s one thing you need to know about Shane: the dude is high speed action, all the time. His tour had us seeing the best of Yamba, including jumping off of a 17 meter high cliff (or being “gently encouraged” off the cliff by Shane). I can’t say too much more about the tour without spoiling any of its surprises, but a trip to Yamba is worth it just for Shane’s Tour alone. And after all the action we saw in Yamba, Alex and I were glad to get to Byron Bay to relax.

Byron Bay

I’ve been using the word “vibe” a lot since I arrived in Australia. Byron Bay is likely the reason for that. Byron Bay is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. It’s this weird, awesome mix of laid back surfers, music loving hippies, and generally chill people. Add in a huge amount of tourists and backpackers who are passing through, and loads of locals from the surrounding towns and cities, and you’ve got a great mix of people who are all looking to relax on the beach and catch some waves. Byron Bay is also home to one of the most easterly points in Australia, so if you’re up early enough you can catch a beautiful sunrise near the lighthouse. I had a little too much fun in the evenings at our hostel, so I never did manage to see that sunrise.

It’s by no means a big town, but Byron Bay is a town. There are lots of great shops and restaurants to check out while you’re there.

Aquarius

The main lounge and bar at Aquarius, where I spent most of my time in the evenings. This picture was taken early in the morning. In the evenings the place gets BUSY.

We stayed at Aquarius Backpackers, and I loved every minute of it. The main floor has a bar and a pool (and a poolside bar). They offer free dinner every night to everyone staying there. Combined with $3.50 beers at happy hour, and 2-for-1 drinks after 9:30, and this becomes a very social hostel. I spent all five of my evenings in the hostel bar taking advantage of everything they had to offer. The hostel bar closes early (around 10:30PM-11PM). They’re partnered with two local bars in town, Cheeky Monkey and Woody’s, so you get free entry and a free drink if you go to one of those places after the hostel bar closes. The hostel also offers fun activities every evening to encourage you to stay: drinking games and karaoke, and even jelly wrestling for girls on one night (it’s less sexy and way more intense than it sounds).

While I’m thinking about it, I have to give a shout out to Frankie at Happy Travels. The Happy Travels desk is right next to the main reception desk in Aquarius, and Frankie helped Alex and I plan our trip to New Zealand with Kiwi Experience. She also managed to save us a HUGE amount of money (we got our tour bus tickets for about 50% off). Alex and I would kill each other if we had to spend 3 weeks in a camper van together, and between rental costs and gas the tour bus wound up being cheaper even before the discount!

I’d also like to give a shout out to Tom, Toby, and Nico: you guys can drink like champs.

Beaches & Surfing

The main beach in Byron Bay is always a popular spot with backpackers and locals filling up the shore.

Of course, Byron Bay isn’t all hostel parties and bars: it’s mostly about the beaches! While in Byron Bay, I made sure to do the coastal walk along the beaches up to the lighthouse. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll let my photos do the talking here. The only thing they don’t really show off is just how freaking hot the sand gets under the intense heat of the Australian sun.

On the walk up to the lighthouse, you wind up seeing a lot of really, really nice homes.

You have to walk through some bush in order to get to the lighthouse.

I took this picture after not seeing anyone for half an hour. I had just passed some snake warning signs and was just a little concerned.

It was very windy in Byron Bay when I went hiking to the lighthouse.

Compared to the views on the coastal walk to and from it, the lighthouse itself isn’t very exciting. It’s a lighthouse: I don’t know what I expected.

The views around were just so much better.

While I was in Byron Bay, I learned to surf! I took two things away from this:

  1. Surfing is awesome.
  2. You need to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or you will burn really, really badly.

I had a 3 hour surf lesson with Gaz at Style Surfing. Gaz is an excellent teacher, and even on the busiest day of the week (Sunday), he was able to get all of us up and surfing some waves. It took me a couple of waves to get a feel for how to stand up, but after that it was actually really easy! I credit this to good teaching, great surfing conditions that morning, and the fact that I was using a very large, very long, well-waxed surfboard.

Noosa

The secret beach along the coastal walk in Noosa feat. Colin, who I met in Noosa and would run in to again in Hervey Bay.

If Byron Bay is where you’d want to go with your college buddies to surf and party, Noosa is where you want to take your family. It has a little bit more of an upscale feel to it compared to Byron Bay. The beaches are just as nice, but the surf is more tame. There are more shops and restaurants and the downtown area feels a bit classier, but the night life is significantly more tame. I don’t actually have a lot of photos of the town itself to prove this. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Here’s another coastal walk shot to make up for my lack of town photos.

We stayed in Noosa for two days at Noosa Flashpackers. This was our first hostel with proper air-conditioning! They also have comfortable beds, free shuttles to the beach and bus station, a very nice kitchen, and do all you can eat pizza on Tuesday nights. I thought about seeing if I could beat the record for most slices eaten (27), but I had a cold for most of my time in Noosa and wasn’t quite feeling up to the challenge.

The coastal walk in Noosa through the National Park is awesome (and clocks in at around 14 kilometers). Filled with hidden beaches and Noosa’s famous fairy pools, it’s something you don’t want to miss while you stay there.

The path gets rough at certain spots. I definitely wish I had worn better shoes than flip-flops.

This is one of the famous Noosa Fairy Pools. It was very busy, so I decided it would be better to come back toward sunset.

One thing I’ve noticed while traveling the Australian East Coast is that there are lots, and lots, and LOTS of very fit people. It probably has to do with the areas I’m visiting: they’re all beaches with beautiful nature trails that give you easy motivation to stay active. I honestly hate running, but even I could see myself doing it most days so long as the weather isn’t too hot.
